"This is a rather beautiful film. This movie focuses heavily on family dynamics, particularly on an uncle and a nephew forming a bond while traveling cross-country. It had the vibe of a road movie in terms of characters and their interactions. What especially struck me was just how organic the relationship felt between Joaquin Phoenix (who plays the uncle), Woody Norman (the nephew) and Gaby Hoffman (the boy’s mom and plays Joaquin’s sister in the movie). Fantastic performances and chemistry from all 3 actors (especially Joaquin Phoenix and Woody Norman). It made me believe like they were family. Equally fantastic was the screenplay and direction by Mike Mills, which never feels clunky at any time moving back and forth between several plot threads, as well as the black and white cinematography which actually adds to the focus on the characters (was reminded of the Alexander Payne movie NEBRASKA in that regard). Additionally, it was incredibly wholesome as well. Not sure if road movie type character dramas will work for everyone, but I really dug this. I really loved the characters here, and it felt like I was following 2 people over a few days. Highly recommended."

"It is now one of my favorite movies. Honestly I was hesitant to watch it because it was in black and white and I hadn’t seen it advertised very much. But I’m so glad that I did watch it because it was a great film. It’s a really good and heartwarming story. A black and white movie is a bold choice in today’s cinema but don’t let that hold u back from seeing this film. In the end, the movie being in black and white feels natural and it enhances the experience. 10/10 movie!! "
