"This one looks hokey at a glance; but, it has something to say, though it says it quietly. It takes a snapshot of a period in America that isn't pretty, without dressing it up a lot. If you wander in from Blacksploitation land or the Tarantino gutter, you might be put off by how this film handles race relations, as it doesn't use stereotypes in the way you expect. If you're coming from a Spike Lee/James Baldwin perspective, this flick may not be conscious or militant enough for you. YMMV"
