"A great microcosm of our Democratic process, for better or worse. "

"As someone who went to the girls’ version of this (Texas Girls State), this documentary perfectly portrays how intense the experience is and how quickly (extreme) lines are drawn in the campaigns. This documentary really makes you think about future of politics and the power of political parties and their messaging as divisions grow wider. Its a modern day Lord of the Flies, but for politics. A lot of it feels very bleak for the future, but there are some amazing hopeful moments starring Garza that feel like the clouds breaking open after a storm. But when the documentary ends you also realize that this happens every year; ~1700 teenagers every summer experience this same thing!! I watched this about a month ago and I’m still thinking about it. Great documentary, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️."
"To be honest, I had never heard of this convention before seeing the movie. I had no idea gender-based political camps for students existed - apparently there’s a Girls State as well. This piece really hones in on white cis male power dynamics within politics. I enjoyed the perspectives of students from varying backgrounds, which added heart to the story and hope for our future. There’s also a bit of comic relief. "
