+/- Since this is closer to a 3⭐ rating I'll start with what didn't quite work for me. First is that there isn't a skillful balance of story and plot. The way I see movies like this is that the plot is the train riding on the tracks whereas the story is what happens in the train. There might be a stop here or there or a slight change in rail lines, but you will undoubtedly start here and end there. Story can be in service of where the train is headed and also have moments that don't have anything to do with the destination. It moves nothing forward, yet allows us to have insights into the characters so that we are more invested in how we reach our destination. Titan A.E. falls flat in this second respect. The characters themselves aren't as fleshed out as in movies like Serenity or even The Iron Giant. It does establish story, but not enough to make it leap through the screen and into our psyche. In addition to this I also felt like the movie was at the whim of the animation technology, which was part traditionally drawn and part computer animated, that was being pushed at that time. Sometimes the animation was too flat to do the voice acting justice and other times it was the other way around. It doesn't happen for long stretches, but this aspect crops up throughout the movie and left me feeling a little underwhelmed.
Having said that, the plot itself is simple and does service the story that is explored. The animation stands out, some of it playing like the show Firefly, only this movie came out first. Though it lacks nuance in story and character development, I didn't think it was boring. If this ever comes onto a streaming platform that you have access to, I think it would be worth a look. I personally wouldn't recommend you go out of your way to look for it. It is a good example of a movie with tons of potential, even if it is unrealized, and that alone has value for people who want to write stories. "
