"I was dragged in by the cover, and I'm not disappointed.
Don't get me wrong, it's beyond over the top. Half the time, it's trying to be a 1930s movie, half the time it's trying to be Mulan, and half the time, it's trying to be a science fiction meets fantasy adventure. Honestly, it seems scattered in every possible way. Yet, just like the title suggests, it's got a lot of Heart.
There's true passion in its storyline and something that overtakes the viewers. Maybe it's the funny moments, or the ridiculous characters, or the dog who's a bit of a surprise. But truly it's the father daughter relationship that shines. In true Mulan fashion, this movie is a father daughter story. That's what drives you to continue watching, their relationship. It even has a nice twist that gives it even more depth and love that you didn't expect it to. That part makes it feel realistic since there wasn't foreshadowing really. Just like life there aren't always signs that point to a precise ending and this did well at balancing surprise with realism. (Granted, it is animated, so much will still be exaggerated)
Plus, unlike other girls trying to pull off pretending to be a man, she does it exceptionally well. Even her outfit and costume are convincing. That was a very pleasant surprise that surpassed other ones who attempted to do the same. She looks like a man when she's dressed up like one.
Now for the villain. Honestly, you expect it. But only because they're trying to force it in another way. I do like the transition that happens for the villain at the end to make them seem like a threat. However, it does fall into that bad habit of not knowing what type of setting this movie is supposed to be made in.
In the end, it was cute. It probably won't be your favorite movie, but it'll move you in some way. Even if it is only near the end when they pay homage to the real life first women firefighters. Overall, an enjoyable time."
"So lets real talk for a second. Within the first 11 minutes, she says her firefighter dad couldn't save her mom's life, gets told that her whole dream and desire is impossible because she wasn't born a boy. Timeskip, she decides to pull a Mulan and dresses as a boy in order to get her dream job. Does this mean we get a lot of girl flirting with girl? Not a lot, but enough to make me smile."
