"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What an incredible, beautiful little film .. and right now, right here at this moment in time .. EXACTLY what I needed. I’ve had to sit with it for days now though and still don’t even know if I can adequately describe it. No humans, no spoken words, yet I was held utterly transfixed from start to finish. Without giving too much away (hopefully!), five disparate animals undergo a cataclysmic event through a sort of deeply primordial civilization. I don’t know what it was meant to represent but I kept thinking Cambodia during the time of Angkor Watt. The animation of this world is absolutely spellbinding, the backgrounds just breathtaking. And the expressiveness of the animals so well done as to be innately understood. It was like dialogue magically translated into my mind despite only minor anthropomorphization, at least to my perspective.
That little housecat held my heart in its tiny paws 💗🐈⬛🫢‼️ I mean ALL the emotions for her survival in some extremely heart stopping scenes that caught my breath or had me exclaiming at the screen (I actually think it may be a little too intense for young kids).
Essentially what came through for me are themes of endings, beginnings, survival, rebirth, unity, and the primal connection to earth, each other and all living things. I don’t think it has to be spelled out who the animals represent if you watch it .. kind of similar to THE WILD ROBOT in some ways, which I watched right before this. Although I liked that one too, have to say FLOW is the film that truly deserves the best animated film Oscar. Just a gorgeous, heartfelt experience 😍"
"I was totally mesmerized by this brilliant, animated film. It's sometimes sad but always enthralling, as we follow the exploits of a black cat as it navigates a flooded world that is post humanity. The cat encounters a wide variety of other animals that ultimately work together to survive an ever changing landscape. The best thing about this film is that it transcends language barriers as it is completely devoid of dialogue but can be viewed and followed by literally anyone, regardless of what language they speak. The animation style is captivating and reminds me of a live action painting. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and highly recommend it for everyone to enjoy. (Although , in retrospect, I don't recommend it for very small children as some scenes might be too much.) 9.5/10"
"I’ve been looking forward to this for months and have purposely limited my knowledge going in to “animals in trouble helping each other”. It’s so beautiful but I had at least six panic attacks watching. My first instinct is to google it cause there’s lots of questions. But I’m gonna hold off and just sit with it for a while. Exciting, touching, funny and not a word of dialogue. "
"Incredible! My jaw literally dropped to the floor with this one! An incredible tale of animals being forced to work together in a post-apocalyptic world, all told without any dialogue. Without question the storytelling is the MVP here, and I was amazed at how emotionally invested I was throughout. This is paired incredibly stunning visuals (all done using the open source software Blender) and unique cinematography and editing for an animated film. I can totally see why this beat THE WILD ROBOT in the Best Animated Film category, and I wouldn’t be mad if it won the Oscar (my god what a year this is proving to be for animation!!!). This film was selected as the Latvian entry for Best International Film as well, and it is a great choice! Easily one of the best films of the year too! Hands down a movie more people need to see!"
