"This is probably closer to a 4.25 than a 4.0 for me. Consistent, quality animation with some inspired experimental sequences make this film shine. Traditional Looney Tunes humor (including some referential humor) and the more modern absurdist humor that's popular with the younger generations are present in spades. I laughed at some jokes my kids didn't laugh at, and they laughed at some jokes that I thought were just weird. The plot is good, and it includes some surprisingly emotional moments. My kids cried, and I think it's the first time either of them has cried in a movie without being scared. But the villain's early dialogue doesn't match with some of what happens later in the film. There are some surprisingly good action sequences. There is, however, one overly long sequence of Porky Pig and Daffy Duck failing at various jobs. The sequence was clearly meant to be funny, and it was just as clearly stretched out to pad the length of the film, but it wasn't that funny, so it makes the movie drag. Part of the problem is that it puts a second butt joke in within a few minutes of another one, which doesn't give enough space. It's also early enough that it makes the viewer concerned that the whole movie will drag, but things pick up once Petunia is introduced just after this sequence. In the end, we all left the theater happier than we went in. I'd definitely watch another Looney Tunes movie from this team, even though it falls short of greatness. "
"The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie propels the iconic duo of Daffy Duck and Porky Pig into a zany, intergalactic escapade that melds classic slapstick with sci-fi thrills. Directed by Pete Browngardt, this film marks the first fully animated Looney Tunes feature-length movie created for a cinema audience.
The narrative kicks off with Daffy and Porky inadvertently uncovering an alien plot to conquer Earth via mind-controlling bubblegum. Their mission to thwart the extraterrestrial scheme is a delightful blend of rapid-fire humor and nostalgic charm. Eric Bauza's voice work shines as he brings both Daffy and Porky to life, capturing their timeless personalities with flair.
Critics have lauded the film for its faithful homage to the original Looney Tunes spirit. Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com describes it as "a charming and often invigorating reimagining of key Looney Tunes characters," noting its balance of classic elements with fresh storytelling. Similarly, Barry Wurst from Hollywood in Toto praises the movie as "a charming, antic and beautifully crafted animated film that generously taps into the inspired silliness of the source material."
Visually, the animation stays true to the franchise's roots, offering vibrant and fluid sequences that evoke a sense of nostalgia. The film's pacing ensures that audiences, both young and old, remain engaged throughout its 91-minute runtime.
The Day the Earth Blew Up successfully resurrects the whimsical essence of Looney Tunes, delivering a family-friendly adventure that honors its legacy while introducing the characters to a new generation.
