Steven Russell leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he’s gay and he’s going to live life to the fullest – even if he has to break the law to do it. Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt (and often succeed at) one impossible con after another.

"“Love sure is a funny thing. Makes you happy, makes you sad, makes you do all sorts of things you never thought you’d do before. In fact, love’s the reason I’m lying here dying.”
A cop, when he comes out of the closet, becomes a con man, an expert con man, but eventually gets caught. When in prison, he meets the love of his love of his life, Phillip Morris, who he’ll stop at nothing to be with.
I Love You Phillip Morris. Made in 2009.
I remember seeing advertisements for this movie when it came out, and me stupidly dismissing it, probably saying like “Oh more Brokeback Mountain type ****” when this movie is nothing like that. I don’t even know what I meant by Brokeback Mountain type **** anyway. Just because it’s about gay people and both actors aren’t? Maybe. I don’t know.
TL;DR: Recommend. A little cringe but worth watching.
Anyway, this movie is good. It’s more along the lines of “Catch Me If You Can” with a twisted love story involved. The acting is very great, yes, coming from Carrey, but especially from Ewan McGregor. Definitely more comedic than I thought too. Some eyerolling humor yes, but there’s some good funny stuff in there too. The drama, the crime stuff, that’ll stick to ya. That’s where the true grit is and that is why I’m recommending this.
PS: Movie is based on a true story.
