+ MAVERICK is a fun comedy western that beams with charm. The western is probably one of the most engaging settings in cinema, but with my recent lack of interest in mindless violence I appreciate this movie all the more. There are certain shootouts here and there, but always in the context of comedy with jokes that subvert the usual western tropes. I also appreciate the affinity this film and its main character have with INDIANA JONES (especially parts of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK). It also couldn't have found a better leading man to carry it than Mel Gibson (despite his notoriously bad reputation in the media). One the best viscerally charismatic actors of the 80s and 90s who always had impeccable comedic timing. James Gardener plays a great supporting character, and equally as funny (and perhaps a bit more dry) as Marshal Zane Cooper. Alfred Molina is also wonderful as the antagonist Angel, helping to give the overall style a nice callback feel to the aforementioned INDIANA JONES, while James Cobourn rounds out the cast with special appearance at the climatic poker game. What I Iike most about this movie is the Hollywood feel we sometimes got in westerns and horror movies of the 90s like THE MASK OF ZORRO and ARMY OF DARKNESS where the set production gave a sense of adventure while also carrying the feel of a cozy time period film. Both outlandishly fun, old fashioned, and in some ways, humble in presentation. There was a smile on my face from beginning to end (and I got a kick out of the LETHAL WEAPON nod). Just a fun time all around.
- I think Jodie Foster, though cute and a good actress, was miscast in this movie. I felt the character needed a lighter touch, something that isn't her strong suit. Also, the double crosses at the end happened a bit too close together. It probably could have ended a good five minutes before it actually did and remained much more interesting. The Hollywood machine does have its drawbacks.
