Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs

"This anime establishes very early on that the hero has been reincarnated into a misandrous world where women hold all the power. It seems early on that this will be compared unfavorably to misogynous structures, but this theme is dropped almost as quickly as it is introduced. Another inconsistency that I noted was the protagonist's feelings on the harem premise. Based on his initial criticisms, and even his statements roughly halfway through, I thought that this was going to be a meta-commentary on the moral indefensibility of harem otome and anime, but it ended with the protagonist having his own sexualized harem of two waiting for him in their underwear seemingly as a reward for his triumph, a "good ending," by very conventional otome standards. I expect a harem anime to be a harem anime, but this internal inconsistency in philosophy definitely detracted from my experience. However, I laughed consistently at this show, with some episodes being gutbusting. So, it succeeds as a comedy, but fails as a commentary and as a romance. I give it four stars for being an enjoyable, if sometimes frustratingly flawed, experience. "
