"I watched this because I was absolutely captivated by #DOPESICK, & earlier TODAY (8/10/23) I read that the Supreme Court blocked Purdue Pharma's $6 BILLION (‼️) opioid settlement, but will hear an appeal ~ https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/10/politics/supreme-court-purdue-pharma-opioid-settlement
PAINKILLER 💊
Similar in its narrative to DOPESICK, this is another provocative #miniseries about the #opioid_crisis & the big, bad, notoriously infamous Purdue Pharma.
I learned all about Purdue’s manipulative marketing gimmicks to push their “wonder drug” — I also learned how they would target 🎯and “MICE” their outspoken opponents.
One such target was a character (and real person) named Curtis Wright, a government agent of the FDA (“the one guy who gave a sh¡t” … supposedly); he was specifically targeted by the Sacklers, & as a result of his meeting with these Purdue higher-ups who must have influenced (and possibly bribed & spun the truth in their favor regarding their little blue pill), he, lamentably, APPROVED the drug, deeming it “BELIEVED to be safe” 😬 — A year later, after he approved it, the guy then steps down from the FDA & goes to work for Purdue 🙄🤦🏻♀️ (shaking my head).
After that, Purdue & it’s founder Richard Sackler, who was President, Co-Chairman, & son of the company’s founder [Wikipedia], went full-force & Purdue was legally able to produce & crank out more & more painkillers to an unsuspecting America [and drug pushers], eventually reeking havoc on numerous people’s lives & many communities, virtually creating the opioid crisis as we know it."
"3.5⭐️ Kind of a weird show but it kept me watching. I think everyone knows about Big Pharma by now and especially OxyContin and this show delves deep into Purdue’s crimes and misdeeds. I’m just not usually a fan of this type of frenetic sensationalistic storytelling. The stupid beeping smoke detector thing was definitely overplayed. So the show’s style may be over the top but I have no doubt of the veracity of a lot of it as it pertains to the drug, Purdue and the devastation it/they wreaked. Btw I thought MB and his weird performance would be the draw (it wasn’t) but Uzo Aduba just had me riveted. "
"If you wish to learn more about how the Sackler family became (likely) the most successful drug dealers in America, I highly recommend reading Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe. From what I remember, there is more to the story and it's actually worse still than what was depicted in the show. Which leads me to say that the show is not exxagerating, though it is tempting to think so because it all seems outrageous. I believe the show has a relatively subtle answer for how the Sackler family was able to go so far with their scheme: they're rich and, more importantly, they're white. Definitely recommend 5/5"
