"I highly recommend watching the movies (3) instead of the whole show which comprises of about 43 episodes (although it was originally meant to have more than that but was cut short). I say this because I’ve watched both and in my opinion, it drags on a bit at times and the movies cut them down to where it’s digestible for anyone wanting to watch Gundam in the order the shows came out (MAINLY FOR THOSE STARTING GUNDAM) . Now apart from that, Tomino is an incredible man and Gundam is a great testament of that. Although the animation isn’t the greatest, even if it was 1979 even during then it was considered lacklustre, the designs of the mobile suit(s) are incredibly iconic and are still very popular in media today. Those looking to get into the mecha genre of anime/shows I think will have a great time starting on the first Gundam universe with this. (Although I highly recommend watching The Origin before this). Gundam 79’s characters are honestly likeable, especially the iconic villain that is Char Aznable and the Principality of Zeon, it’s a series that takes you into the conflicts of war and how it’s affects people not only physically but physiologically, with our protagonist Amuro Ray having been only a teen when he first started piloting the Gundam, and shows his progression with battles and the aftermaths. "Recently wanted to try Gundam as an adult. Last Time I watched the original Mobile suit Gundam was on Toonami. Unfortunately the week after 9/11 they pulled this show, along with 8th MS Team and reruns of Gundam Wing off the air.
If you can get past a lot of the animation errors due to the fact that this show came out in 1979, this show is a masterpiece when it comes to characters, storytelling and world building. Char Anzable walked so Eren Jaeger from Attack on Titan can run.
Highly recommend watching the show. It's 42 episodes long. Alternatively you can also watch the 3 part movies that are available on Netflix. "
"Gundam is one of the most influential animes of all time. A legendary war drama and coming-of-age story set in the far or near future of Universal Century 0079. Gundam follows Amuro Ray as he struggles to survive and eventually do what he feels he must to defend those he loves while grappling with the horrors of warfare and PTSD. This 43-episode epic is about The One Year War, the most devastating war mankind has ever fought, a war for independence that is hijacked by despots and dictators."
