"4.25⭐️ BLACK CAKE was my favorite book of 2022 and I was definitely nervous about an adaptation. Happy to say the show comes just this🤏🏼 shy of doing the book justice. In its own right it’s a greatly underrated and truly excellent series. Very well written, cast, performed and beautifully filmed. As stated in my book review, this is an emotional mystery about family, secrets, heritage, identity, betrayal, loss, and how the unfortunate choices of just one person can generate trauma that flows and snowballs into the next generation, in this case, unknowingly. It didn’t *quite* take me to the emotional heights of the book but it does effectively (and affectingly) go to some uncomfortable places and did keep me invested in every episode. I hope more people see it! "
"What a beautiful story and amazing acting. I wish I read the book first. The narration is simply captivating provoking all kinds of feelings. "

"It's really good. Will definitely put you in your feels. I sat through it with my guts twisted in contention for most of it. A good dissection of the lives people live and the pressures and pitfalls society presses against people.
I loved the mums story and wanted to hear more but was definitely with the kids too. Each new confession brought an upheaval. It's a great discussion starter, each episode we were like, should she have told them sooner, at all? It also highlights the massive shifts in attitudes between each generation. The older generations taught to not out up fuss, so keep quiet and take their lumps, leaving the younger generations to navigate around them slightly adrift."

"Why it's great 1st, the actors and actresses are some stellar humans, really great character development. BUT I have major issues with the pov changing to Lin when it's supposed to be Eleonor telling this story. There are things she just couldn't have known. It's lazy and I hate it, but other than that this is a really nice show. "
"I absolutely fell head over heels for this show from the very first episode! It beautifully portrays the struggles and traumas that many amazing women of color face in their lives. Without giving too much away, I highly recommend taking a moment to watch at least the first three episodes with an open mind and you'll be absolutely captivated. Trust me, you'll discover that there's a bit of Covey in all of us!"
