"Very good black and white crime series originally aired from 1960 to 1963. Made by British BBC and located mostly in France, it appeared to me to take place in the 1950's. Interesting stories where the investigation of murders or other important crimes proceed at a good pace, but is delivered to us in a softer / gentler way than today's crime dramas. Humour and human touches are also present in just the right doses, and in a very natural way. Very little to no musical score to support the action. Solid acting from all main characters, sometimes theatrical / caricatural from secondaries. Very charming to see the way of life of the period in France - already modern, but still 'old world'. Quality TV for the period, and a pleasure to watch. A bit of background: Inspecteur Maigret is probably the most famous fictional detective in French culture. Created by Belgian author George Simenon, Maigret appears in more than 100 novels and short stories published from 1931 to 1972, and is still widely read. His role has been interpreted in more than 25 TV series and movies, the last time as recently as last year in 2022. I found this series by pure chance, and liked it quite a bit. EDIT: imo, seasons 2, 3, and 4 are much better than the first. Give them a try."
