"Another great series I’m enjoying, also recommended to me by @Tracey_Newhouse. This series is directed by Steven Soderbergh, stars Clive Owen, and is loosely based on real events. ▪️The Knickerbocker Hospital was a real location in Harlem during the early part of the twentieth century, and served poor, marginalized communities who could not afford medical care. It also had a policy to not treat African American patients, as depicted in the show.
▪️This period medical drama presented audiences with “compelling characters, rich and unsavory themes, cutting-edge special effects and cinematography reminiscent of Stanley Kubrik.”
▪️ Clive Owen plays the surgery staff’s newest leader, Dr. John Thackery. Wholly unlikeable for the bulk of the series’ initial episodes, the ambitious surgeon struggles against an addiction to cocaine and opium, desperate to maintain his glowing reputation among hospital staff while belittling a great many people in the process.
▪️ Despite a fair amount of critical & commercial success, this series, unfortunately, was cancelled. Find out why & more about this show here: https://www.cbr.com/why-knick-canceled-cinemax/"
"How did I miss this one?! 2014 series starring Clive Owen as a cocaine addicted (albeit brilliant) surgeon in 1900 NYC when operating on the human body was fairly new. The contraptions they invented that we take for granted today are astonishing. The costumes, dark scenery and accompanying music are perfection. Sad there are only 2 seasons! "
