In the 14th century, Barcelona is experiencing one of its most prosperous moments. The city has grown to La Ribera, a fishing district in which the largest Marian temple ever known is built: Santa María del Mar. But the construction runs parallel to Arnau Estanyol, a serf of the land who, fleeing the abuses of The feudal lords of the countryside take refuge in Barcelona.

"If you like dark and depressing, this may be a good show for you. Personally though, I found myself so frustrated by the extreme levels of ignorance and depravity displayed that I was usually just trying to keep my blood from boiling while watching each episode. Still, I did watch the whole series and, sadly, I think the writers were actually fairly accurate in most of their portrayals of human history during this time. (Tho I don’t buy Brother Joan’s actions at the end at all.)"
