"This series is based on the book written by Yangsze Choo. I have never read the book, so I can’t do a comparison. I did like the series, but I didn’t love it. I felt the last episode was a bit rushed. I felt that they had to tie up a lot of loose ends into one episode. If they had been able to do more episodes, then it would have been better. "
"Adapted for Netflix from the book by Yangsze Choo. Poor Li Lan (Huang Peijia) is a Malaysian Chinese girl living in 1890s Colonial Malacca. One day she is suddenly forced to consider the proposal of the rich Lim family as a Ghost Bride to their recently deceased son Tian Qing (Kuang Tian) who was murdered. If she accepts all of her father’s business debts will be cleared and her future will be secured. Li Lan struggles with her feelings for her childhood friend and current doctor Tian Bai (Ludi Lin) who is now engaged. Li Lan eventually makes a deal with Tian Qing’s ghost to assist with the investigation of his murder in exchange for her father’s freedom from the Underworld. In doing so she meets the heavenly guard Er Lang (Wu Kang-Jen) who ends up helping her investigate the murder. Li Lan slowly finds herself investigating both on Earth and in the Underworld in order to save her father’s soul and obtain her freedom from Tian Qing as his Ghost Bride.
Skip the show and read the book. At the core this light hearted story focuses heavily on the romantic comedy narrative. As most of the horror, paranormal, and underworld explorations are shallow and forgettable. While many characters only serve the purpose of one dimensional bland archetypes such as “childhood friend,” “caring mother,” or “devoted father” and lack real depth or complexity. The world building fails to deliver on its promise of a supernatural adventure and the plot is reminiscent of a typical romantic drama complete with a giant love quadrangle! Teenagers and K-drama lovers will find this watchable but cliche in the worst way. Everyone else will find it hard to care about this lackluster mystery that feels stiff and doesn’t know how to deliver a good mystery, romance, or paranormal story.
