"This was pretty cool. When I started this, I knew some people had DNF'd it or just didn't like it. That kind of "scared" me because I was really looking forward to this book, but now that I've read it, I can say I actually enjoyed it. At first, it was slow and the world building felt like it was just dumped all in 3 chapters. It's not like Holly Black's writing style in her YA books(those I felt were less heavy and less dense). This one kind of made me sleepy but once I got past that, I couldn't stop. Charlie Hall is a cool character that just got the short end of the stick when it came down to her lifestyle. But she made the best of it. There were at times, were I was slightly confused on what she was talking about and where the plot was going. The twists were great, I had fun being shocked 😅. I'll definitely be reading book 2!"
"This book had me. We are talking dark, trickery, mischief. My middle names if I could have so many. Charlie felt so real. In a way where I instantly connected with her. She didn't mess about and Charlie did things her own way. She had a lot depth. Caring, scrupulous, but with an edge. So the first half was a build up of character.<br/><br/>This world felt well established even in the beginning though it was not fully explained. The magic, absolutely unique and twisted. Charlie's detective work kept me turning pages. I was giving just enough crumbs that had be begging for more. All while slowly building to a crescendo. Now the dule timeline did slow my pace only because I cared more for the now even though the past was semi important too.<br/><br/>Vince seemed like a place holder at first. Just a fleeting addition to Charlie's life. But the more I read about him the more mysterious he became. The relationship between the two vexed but in a good way. There was just something about them that left me wanting more. The relationship developed into dynamic, mysterious, and an intriguing twist. And boy what a twist it was.<br/><br/>The story ended on a cliffhanger but even so I thought the Book of Night was a standalone. Still I enjoyed it either way but I'm am curious to see more if there is to be a sequel. In the end I thought the romance was fresh and unique. Mostly in the background but wonderfully confounding none the less and the magic left me curious about future prospects.<br/><br/><br/>Favorite Quote:<br/><br/><br/>"Or there's a service that ships packages filled with glitter to your enemies. They don't call it the herpes of crafting for nothing.""
