His Black Tongue

"There is no plague in Enfaire... Dead things have been found in the fields of Enfaire, a God-fearing town north of Reams. Not just dead things but twisted forms... unholy shapes. And there are rumours, too—of a blasphemous union and of fell creatures that haunt the night. Yet, even as plague and witch pyres blacken the sky, the town remains untouched by the malady that has already claimed thousands and will claim thousands more. It is here, in Enfaire, that an old Franciscan friar and his ward take shelter from a storm. It is here, in a little town on the edge of civilization, that they will have their faith truly tested. His Black Tongue is a tale of medieval horror, plunging the reader into the plague-torn land of 14th century France, when pestilence and death walked hand-in-hand, and life was little more than a sputtering candle, waiting to be put out. But there are worse things than death, than sickness and decay... and it comes upon leathery black wing." --

"I made the mistake of listening to this as an audiobook, my rating is rounded up based on my experience of format. The material was dramatized, with music and all, and I found it incredibly annoying and distracting. Any enjoyment I could have had was thwarted by listening instead of reading, so I can’t even speak very much to the stories themselves. If you like dramatized books, you might really like this one."

"Mixed bag of stories. I liked most of them, but a few I felt ended way too abruptly and without any resolution. I don’t mean even in just a cliffhanger way, I mean there was a point where I literally had to check to make sure I wasn’t missing pages for one of the stories.
Overall a good collection. Lots of variety in terms of subject, time period, and mood. All have a hellish Lovecraftian flair to them that makes them a solid read for anyone looking for short stories of that type!"
"I didn't realize this was a book of short stories. The 1st was incredible. If we had ended there my rating would be 4☆. The 2nd I wasn't big fan of a lot of the elements & the 3rd story barely even held my attention. I was kind of disappointed when we didn't carry on with the 2 characters from story 1 [2.75☆]"
