Jennette McCurdy
A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life. Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants. Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

"This is absolutely not the kind of book I'd normally go for, I like to stick to fiction and horror. This is, in some ways, a horror novel. There are some horrendous personal stories in here I would never be able to share with anyone. I felt somewhat obligated to read this as I've liked a lot of what Jeanette McCurdy has done in her youth, and hearing what she went, and is, going through is heartbreaking. If you want to be a little more sad, and see some of the true horrors of the world, give this book a read.
Props to you Jeanette, I hope life treats you better."
"I recently finished this book. It’s a very well written, highly engaging and probably worthy of being book-of-the-year. But I must admit throughout the book, I kept cringing. I believe her Mom’s approach to life was “ends justify the means” and Jennette - as per the book - doesn’t buy into that philosophy. Though I do not agree with Mom’s approach, I also do not agree with how author used her celebrity status to cash on this. 🤷♀️"
"Such a great autobiography! This keeps you interested from start to finish it does get upsetting at times because of the mom and how she was it just makes you wanna shout “no” or “I don’t want to do that” if you were Jeanette. I was a fan of her since Icarly and I didn’t watch Sam and Cat just a couple episodes, but its sad to think that she was going through so much during all of that and Im glad she is doing better now and that the book had and is having the success it deserves. "I listened to the book in jenettes voice! Omg! She is a talented writer, narrator, and storyteller! Her story is relatable on many levels, if not for the ED, then for the toxic relationships with oneself and with others. A must read! I never read memories but this was my first and it was good! 6 stars not just 5!"
"Wow. wow wow wow. The honesty. The rawness. The sorrow. There’s so much emotion evoked from reading this memoir, and I will say it’s definitely worth the hype. There’s so much more I can say, but I’m going to keep it simple: you need to read it! Hopefully Jennette gets to bless us with more of her written works. "
"I Listened to the audiobook and Jeanette is a great narrator.
At moments, her audiobook was hard to listen to. Listening to her describe how she felt as a kid from that perspective that she was as a kid was something I enjoyed a lot. Overall, I don’t have much to say other than that I enjoyed hearing and learning about what Jeanette went through and how she is recovering."
