Washington Irving
First penned in 1820, Washington Irving's humorous, yet haunting, narrative tells of a local schoolmaster whose lonely trot home turns into a night of fright when he is met on the road by the Headless Horseman. Adapted here for younger readers and accompanied by rich acrylics, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow endures as the finest of American ghost stories.

"I was excited when my book club picked this because I am directing a play version right now. I have to say, I was rather disappointed. As there is no dialogue and Irving goes into such detail about everything, which is too much for a novella, the story drags and seems like nothing but exposition. The climax was lost in excess description."
"What better to get in the Halloween spirit than with this timeless ghostly tale? Figured I’d check out the source material to this since I’ve been on a classics roll (see: Frankenstein) and it’s short since it’s only a novella. I enjoyed it for what it was: a quick little tale that could be told by the campfire and spook those who wonder about the Headless Horseman. I also really enjoyed the story structure, the post script was an excellent touch."
