New York Times bestselling author Tiffany D. Jackson ramps up the horror in this suspenseful YA novel following a biracial teenager as her Georgia high school hosts its first integrated prom. When Springville residents—at least the ones still alive—are questioned about what happened on prom night, they all have one explanation . . . Maddy did it. An outcast at her small-town Georgia high school, Madison Washington has always been a teasing target for bullies. And she’s dealt with it since she had more pressing problems to manage. Until the morning a surprise rainstorm reveals her most closely kept secret: Maddy is biracial. She had been passing for white her entire life at the behest of her fanatical white father, Thomas Washington. After a viral bullying video pulls back the curtain on Springville High’s racist roots, student leaders come up with a plan: host the first integrated prom as a show of unity. Popular white class president convinces her Black superstar quarterback boyfriend to ask Maddy to be his date, leaving Maddy wondering if it’s possible to have a normal life. But some of her classmates aren’t done with her just yet. And they don’t know that Maddy still has another secret . . . one that will cost them all their lives.

"The Weight of Blood poses the question, what if Stephen King’s Carrie was Black? TDJ flips the original story on its head with her story of Maddy a Black girl being forced to pass as white by her abusive father in a small southern town. The Black students dealt with a lot of micro aggressions and racist bullying from their classmates, teachers, and school administrators and all of this is happening during the telling of Maddy’s story.
I’m gonna be honest with y’all as much as I love TDJ, I was not a fan of the first 30% of the book, not because there was anything wrong with the book, it was just boring. But once I got past that 30%! It was so good.
Kenny is one of the “good” Black people. Doesn’t make waves and does everything he can to appease his father, white friends and girlfriend. Kenny was great and I felt for him throughout the story. I expected Maddy’s dad to be a literal piece of crap but Kenny’s dad was freaking awful. Honestly 90% of the people in that town were absolutely horrid. "
"Not my kind of book (I hate unresolved endings) but for fans of the horror genre it was a lovely mirage to Steven king’s “Carrie.” I enjoyed the plot and got very invested in the characters. Kenny loves her the way I love women and I just adore that. If your thinking about reading this book I’d suggest doing so, it was really a lovely book to read. Just don’t expect a happy ending. "
"I love this book!! I was hooked from Chapter 1 and as someone who doesn’t really like horror this book wasn’t scary enough to be tbh(not in a bad way but just that I loved this book and the horror element surprisingly didn’t make me feel scared) Would definitely recommend for an October spooky book!
