"Sort of a cross between the Bachelor and Hunger Games. A fierce teenage girl is taken from a prison to compete against Fae teenagers to be queen to a Fae king who seems too good to be true. Are they being deceived?
There are some non fade to black scenes that can be skipped without missing the plot. "

"More than 50% in and the only “romance” so far is between MC and the Sun King and there’s absolutely no chemistry. I’ve just been convinced the entire time that he’s not into it at all and just scheming. Meanwhile, Lor had SO MUCH MORE chemistry with every other man in the book—like the guard. I’ve been sure at every second that this isn’t the romance we’re waiting for.

There also feels like no lead up whatsoever to the sexy scenes. I guess that’s the lack of chemistry. It feels completely out of nowhere. These scenes felt so formulaic like the author was thinking while writing, ‘this is what sex is like, right?’ The King is so flat.

Okay and now I am finished. My above thoughts remain the same and…

Did anything even happen?"
"Not great but not too terrible. Will somewhat fill the void as you’re waiting for your next SJM book. "

"This book is an amalgamation of every fantasy book ever. It’s heavily leaning on the Selection + Lightlark/Powerless/any book with trials ever vibes.
That being said I’m still intrigued! Can I infer where this is going? Sure. Am I still gonna read book 2? Absolutely.

Also there was a change in tense from present to past when we switched between the two points of view even though it’s the exact same timeline which is frustratingly unecessary and confusing."
"Unexpectedly quite nice. My red flag alert was going off the charts for Atlas, and what do you know, I was right. I’m glad Lor wasn’t completely naive and was a bit cautious of him too. She was a pretty bad ass mc, and I loved seeing her scrap with the other contestants when they pushed her too far.
The synopsis saying this was a “bachelor meets the hunger games” made me skip over this book when I saw it earlier because it seemed cringey, but I was desperate for something to read so I figured I’d give it a chance. I just wish I’d read it closer to the release of book 2. Anyway, I look forward to coming back and getting to know more about the characters and the world. There’s a few predictable tropes I can see happening, but I think it’ll be enjoyable nevertheless."
"Love it!!!"
