"It's crazy how the author can come up with these dystopian societies. This is my least favorite in the series. I just wish the ending of this one was a little more striking or unexpected. "

"This was a good story but if you’re trying to find out the ending of The Giver you won’t find it in this part of the quartet. The choppy language of the people in the story took a moment to get used to but smoothed out over time. "

"kinda boring other than like the big mystery revealed literally being a murder but I had already figured that out before it was revealed. also my biggest complaint is Lowry's casual child abuse as discipline in both this book and the giver. even in the giver which is a dystopian society framed as a utopia without pain or suffering has hitting as discipline which is just not an appropriate way of handling mistakes especially ones as little as mispeaking. disappointing to see it continued in this book and also forms of slavery and discrimination primarily for disabilities."

"3.5 Stars rounded up<br/><br/>While this book didn't grab my attention from the start the same way [b:The Giver|3636|The Giver (The Giver, #1)|Lois Lowry|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1342493368l/3636._SY75_.jpg|2543234] did, near the end I became more invested in the characters and what was happening.<br/><br/><spoiler> The reveal in the end that Kira's father was alive and the Singer was held literally captive with ankle chains was something I didn't see coming. The fact that there weren't any beasts but instead cruel humans was more easy to see after all of the context clues that were left from Annabella and other people saying there wasn't any beasts.</spoiler>"
