In this "crackling domestic suspense" filled with "wry humor and deft pacing" (Alyssa Cole), no one bats an eye when a Black reality TV star is found dead—except her estranged half-sister, whose refusal to believe the official story leads her on a dangerous search for the truth. I found out she’d died from the New York Daily News.” When the body of reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found on a playground in the Bronx the morning after her twenty-fifth birthday party, the police and the media are quick to declare her death an overdose. A tragedy, certainly, but not a crime. Yet Columbia grad student Lena—principled, headstrong, and allergic to the spotlight—knows that can’t be the case. Despite the bitter truth that the two hadn’t spoken in two years, they were half-sisters. Lena knew Desiree. And Desiree would never travel above 125th Street. Something is very wrong with the facts. So why is no one listening? While the two sisters had been torn apart by Desiree’s partying and by their difficult father, Lena becomes determined to find justice for Desiree. Even if that means untangling her family’s darkest secrets—or ending up dead herself.“A briskly plotted, socially astute thriller.” ―Los Angeles Times “Equal parts charm and heartbreak, with razor-sharp insights on class, race, and family.” —Laura Lippman “Dishes up the glitz of the haves and the struggles of the have-nots, infusing classic noir storytelling with Big Apple glamour—#pageturner.” —Oprah Daily “A twisty murder mystery with nuance and heart.” ―BookPage “Noir for the media-struck generation...Original and witty.” ―National Public Radio

"I love Kellye Garrett and her writing. While this book is definitely different than her Hollywood Homicide books, it's still another great one. This audiobook is very well done and the narrator, Bahni Turpin, is talented. I always love listening to Bahni Turpin as the narrator on audiobooks and she did great with this one. She really brought the story to life, also the characters, and brought their personalities out, which added to the listening experience.
This story is a good one. It's a mystery/thriller about Lena Scott and her half-sister, Desiree Pierce is found dead. Lena becomes the unofficial detective in the case of her half-sister's death, which they claim is due to a drug overdose, but Lena doesn't think it adds up. As Lena starts to investigate, she finds more questions than answers to everything. Lena checking into things and trying to find/figure out what happened with Desiree brings out complicated family dynamics and relationships that have to be navigated to help figure out what happened. I love Lena and her character and this engaging and great thriller.
Thanks so much to Hachette Audio for letting me listen to and review this ALC. Make sure to check this out and give it a listen. All thoughts and opinions are my own."
"Poorly written, and the twist made no sense. The main character really annoyed me and seemed very immature. "

"This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I love thrillers like this because I love trying to figure out who did it… this book was no different. It kept me guessing, only for me to figure out who actually did it. This ended on a slight cliffhanger, but not enough for me not to guess what happened. Lena Scott, was an amazing main character. Trying to see the good, but not denying the bad. A MUST READ!!!"
