From #1 New York Times-bestelling author of Odder and The One and Only Ivan, Wishtree is the beautiful, nuanced story of an oak tree and a crow who help their neighbors embrace their differences.Trees can't tell jokes, but they can certainly tell stories. . . .Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood "wishtree"—people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red's branches. Along with a crow named Bongo and other animals who seek refuge in Red's hollows, this wishtree watches over the neighborhood. You might say Red has seen it all. Until a new family moves in. Not everyone is welcoming, and Red's experience as a wishtree is more important than ever.Funny, deep, warm, and nuanced, this is Katherine Applegate at her very best—writing from the heart, and from a completely unexpected point of view. This book has Common Core connections.

"I listened to the audiobook on and off. Boy, this author really went to town with the prompt, “If trees could talk.” And I liked it. This is a nice book especially good for kids.<br/><br/>I liked the story the author went with having it involve community and some racism towards a family that had recently just moved into the neighborhood and what good things people could accomplish when working together. I like the dialogue the animals have with each other and Red the actual main character, the tree. It was a pleasant surprise and I liked how Red truly has lived to see history and how the community eventually was shaped, starting with Mave, an Irish lady who started the tradition of making Red the wishing tree.<br/><br/>Imagine the stories trees could really tell us if they could physically talk.<br/><br/>"

"Hats off, once again to Katherine Applegate, and her ability to share some of the problems of the world with her young, and not so young, readers. Friendship, immigration, nature, and conflict are some of the themes in Wishtree, which Katherine tells with warmth, compassion, humor, and empathy.<br/><br/>The tagline for Feiwel and Friends (the publisher's of Wishtree) is: "Our books are friends for life" and Wishtree is destined to become a favorite book for life of many Applegate friends, both old and new!"
