An instant New York Times bestseller! “Will keep you guessing until the last page.” —Cinda Williams Chima, New York Times bestselling author A girl travels back in time to find a mysterious book that could save her future in Lisa Maxwell’s “splendid series opener” (Kirkus Reviews).Stop the Magician. Steal the book. Save the future. In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives. Esta is a talented thief, and she's been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future. But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

"2.5/5 ⭐️
I liked the elements of magic and that no one had the same magic in the story. I enjoyed how everyone’s magic was showcased in how they did their jobs throughout the book. There was more action in the last half of the book. The first 250 is basically setting the stage for the characters and the plot. There is a time traveling aspect which really doesn’t bounce around until the end of the book when the story is coming together. Esta is a successful thief so there are heists in this book where you don’t know if her and her crew will make it out. She has to build trust with strangers, prove her worth, and not make impulsive decisions that could alter the path of time. There is action in this book, some magic, some romance, and some twists and turns that you may or may not see coming.
Honestly one of the biggest let downs of this book for me was I felt like it was too long for what was happening in the story. I understand fantasy books can range on the long side if it’s world building and setting the scene. However this book mainly takes place in 1902 Manhattan, and by the end of the book I felt like there wasn’t much to show for the long read.
This book leaves a lot of room open for improvement in the next book (four book series), I just think that the idea of the book was better than the execution for me. If there was more magic used, more action, and more twists I think that could bring this book up. The idea that there’s all these secrets that Esta knows nothing about could benefit the book if they present them properly in the rest of the series. I just think the other books will really have to build off this one in order to wow me. "
"This book will surprise you. It's very well written and the characters and setting are dynamics and interesting. I loved that this book was set in New York and 1902 New York was especially interesting. I really liked the inclusion of the map because it was very helpful. This book has a number of twists and turns that I didn't see coming and it held my attention until the very end."
