NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A deeply powerful memoir about bipolar illness that has both transformed and saved lives—with a new preface by the author. Dr. Jamison is one of the foremost authorities on manic-depressive (bipolar) illness; she has also experienced it firsthand. For even while she was pursuing her career in academic medicine, Jamison found herself succumbing to the same exhilarating highs and catastrophic depressions that afflicted many of her patients, as her disorder launched her into ruinous spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempted suicide. Here Jamison examines bipolar illness from the dual perspectives of the healer and the healed, revealing both its terrors and the cruel allure that at times prompted her to resist taking medication.

"This is a really great book to get an idea of how it is to be bipolar or at least understand it a little bit. If you know someone who has it and you want to be able to better understand what they are going through and be able to help them this is a must read. Plus this is actually an interesting read. It isn't boring like a lot of books that get into medical information and this gives great insight into the life and mind of a person with a brain that doesn't work like your average "normal person"."
"So many, thanks very much for asking. The Bible, The Four Agreements, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, The 100 Secret Senses by Amy Tan. I love Amy Tan, Alice Hoffman, Anne Tyler, & when I was younger Stephen King and his alias Richard Bachman . I can’t read him anymore. I can’t take terror, horror, violence, very dark themes. Whom do you suggest?"
