Ruth Ware
Harkening to Agatha Christie’s classic And Then There Were None, this high-tension thriller follows five couples trapped on a storm-swept island as a killer stalks among them—from Ruth Ware, the New York Times bestselling author who “is turning out to be as ingenious and indefatigable as the Queen of Crime” (The Washington Post).Lyla is in a bit of a rut. Her post-doctoral research has fizzled out, she’s pretty sure they won’t extend her contract, and things with her boyfriend, Nico, an aspiring actor, aren’t going great. When the opportunity arises for Nico to join the cast of a new reality TV show, One Perfect Couple, she agrees to try out with him. A whirlwind audition process later, Lyla finds herself whisked off to a tropical paradise with Nico, boating through the Indian Ocean towards Ever After Island, where the two of them will compete against four other couples—Bayer and Angel, Dan and Santana, Joel and Romi, and Conor and Zana—in order to win a cash prize. But not long after they arrive on the deserted island, things start to go wrong. After the first challenge leaves everyone rattled and angry, an overnight storm takes matters from bad to worse. Cut off from the mainland by miles of ocean, deprived of their phones, and unable to contact the crew that brought them there, the group must band together for survival. As tensions run high and fresh water runs low, Lyla finds that this game show is all too real—and the stakes are life or death.

"4⭐️ This was the summer suspense thriller I needed. ONE PERFECT COUPLE is not groundbreaking by any means but it does a few things well, taking intentionally stereotypical tropes, nasty villains and MANY unlikeable characters and packs them into the beachiest of isolation vacation reads. I’d say this book is not so much a mystery as a survival thriller, an ominous death filled one recalling a mix of Lord of the Flies, One by One and .. since I don’t watch them .. [insert currently popular dating reality show here, one of the island ones]. It’s tense and shocking but not twisty in the sense we’ve come to expect and does take a minute to ramp up. Ruth Ware, however, has a way of evoking location and ambience and I could feel the hot sticky desperation wafting from the page. I have liked her modern gothics better but this was a fun, quick, compelling book that kept calling me back at a time when few others have (a frustratingly long reading slump!!). So like me, if you’re still looking for summery poolside reads, if thrillers are your thing and you don’t expect Pulitzer Prize winners but a likely GR Choice nomination .. this might be the one. "
"A strong 3.5⭐️ or a scant 4⭐️. I’m not sure what it is about Ruth Ware books…… I like them but…..her last couple have just been mediocre for me. They keep me going and I read them fast but by the end I feel underwhelmed. Turn of the key is the last book I read by her, that I actually enjoyed. This was a good beach read. "
"Not my favorite Ware book, but she is so good with dialog that it was a compelling listen start to finish. Didn't like that there was no whodoneit drama "

"I enjoy reading Ruth Ware and this was a great beach book. I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen and I liked the wrap up of loose ends at the end of the book. Midway through I felt like I should have taken some notes to remember all the character’s details(!), but overall very enjoyable. "

"200 pages too long, underwhelming “twist” if you can even call it that, and overall boring. Not my favorite of hers by a long margin. So sad cause some of her other work is amazing. "

"I love all of Ruth Ware’s books! Ony by One is my favorite. One Perfect Couple is an entertaining book, with many twists and turns! For fans of “reality TV” & a good murder (or several murders 😎) mystery… this will be a must read (or listen to the audio book version… once again read by Imogen Church)"
