Once an adult though, the fae ask a favor of Toadling: return to the human world and offer a blessing of protection to a newborn child. Simple, right? But nothing with fairies is ever simple.Centuries later, a knight approaches a towering wall of brambles, where the thorns are as thick as your arm and as sharp as swords. "This was my first experience with Kingfisher and I definitely liked what I read. She was able to retell "Sleeping Beauty" in a really sweet way. With a shape-changing toad-fairy, and a doofy knight. I liked how this story just flowed, it didn't feel like it was forced to be told, but it was like an uninterrupted stream of words. It's a fast read, easily achievable in one day of reading. The characters were sort of pathetic at times, especially Toadling but it added to the charm of the book. Kingfisher talked about how she considered this novella to be sweet in nature, even with the bloodthirsty princess and violent scenes of animal violence. I agree with her, this is a story that tells of the good in people, that people strive to make other people better and to help when they make mistakes.
At least trying to make people who have no one feel loved is one of the great gifts of life."
"Full of love, fairytale-esc book. Dare I say, cozy fantasy? Uncommon main characters in a common story. Lovely."

"This is a really well-done subversion of fairy tale tropes. I love the main character, the setting, and a lot of things the book does as its story unfolds. There are a lot of fairy tales that sacrifice the (illusion of) autonomy of their characters for the sake of a familiar narrative, and it's refreshing that this book doesn't do that. Tropes are subverted, bonds are formed, and things that have always bothered me in fairy tales are addressed. I really like this book."
