This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves. When Haymitch's name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He's torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he's been set up to fail. But there's something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

"Anyone who read the original Hunger Games books knows Haymitch. They know how damaged he is. No one starts this book not knowing what they’re getting themselves into. Did that knowledge help prepare me for the emotional damage that was inflicted upon me?….apparently not. I loved getting this glimpse into the past with the people we’ve come to know and love. I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. I cried…more than once. Brutal. Tragic. And somehow still beautiful."
"I definitely came into this book knowing it would be sad, but I didn’t expect to cry as much as I did. This truly was a missing puzzle piece to the series, I have more appreciation for certain characters and everything they went through. The ending truly broke me, even though I kinda expected it. I absolutely loved this book and the writing was incredible! "
"not unlike the hunger games fanfiction i wrote at 12 years old. a return to form after abosas that plants some seeds for the original trilogy while bridging the gap between the two. there are some absolutely brutal descriptions that make current me sad for future me when this is inevitably adapted into a pg-13 movie "
"Well written and definitely worth reading if you enjoyed the original trilogy. Heavy on the fan service, though. Lots of random implanted characters from the og books. Similarly, the plot feels as if it was molded specifically in response to the ballad of songbirds and snakes. If you haven't read that one yet, read it before this. Haymitch's thoughts are extremely direct and read more as facts than thoughts or opinions. Unlike TBOSAS, very little is left open for interpretation. Haymitch and his companions are also never actually wrong, almost every presumption or guess ends up being right, side characters understand what's happening immediately. The story doesn't feel like it's happening in the present, more like a compilation of his feelings throughout his hunger games experience. Not as compelling as the originals but still worth reading, however, the ending is quite sad. Excited for the movie !"
