Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches. There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment.Chosen by Audible.com as the best sci-fi novel of 2012! Padlocked doors. Strange light fixtures. Mutant cockroaches. There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s. Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends. Or the end of everything... "A riveting apocalyptic mystery in the style of LOST." --Craig DiLouie, author of THE INFECTION and THE KILLING FLOOR "A wholly original story that weaves together mystery and the apocalypse like a finely tuned band." --Evan Roy, Bricks of the Dead

"This was my first Peter Clines book, however it is not my last… I have read everything is written currently available. All of them are loosely linked in the same universe. All I would classify is a horror sci-fi mash up. Except paradox bound, which is more of a time traveling Syfy political statement… not a single book he’s written should be missed try them all you won’t be disappointed!"
"An enjoyable read involving fun, relatable characters and a good old fashioned mystery with a few floors of twists. It is witty enough not to take itself too seriously and creative enough to be engaging.

Language, violence, dark/adult themes, implicit references to the occult, brief sex & nudity: Reference to a woman topless, short/graphic but tasteful sex scene (chapter 69 can be skipped without compromising plot), references to the characters having had sex."
"I didn't know what genre this book was (just read the description) and hadn't read anything else by this author but I liked that I didn't know whether this was going to be a horror or straight-up mystery or something else. This was a an entertaining mystery that kept you wondering about all the strange occurrences in everyone's apartments. Developed characters (although some blatantly stereotypical) and good dialogue rounded out the story. While the mystery did take most of the book to unfold I didn't have an issue with that as the writing was good and each discovery built upon the one before it. It was unraveling the mystery that kept it going and made it entertaining.

I didn't have a problem with the action at the second part of the book - once you knew more about the mysterious building - but it did feel little rushed to wrap things up at the end.

Like some have said, there were a lot of unanswered questions and it would have been nice to see some of them answered. For example, I would have liked to know what happened to the other tenants.

All in all, I would still recommend it."
