Intrepid amateur sleuth and bakery owner Hannah Swensen finds herself judging a baking contest where the competition is really murder in this cozy culinary mystery for fans of Jenn McKinlay, Ellie Alexander, Laura Childs and Kate Carlisle. When the president of Hartland Flour chooses cozy Lake Eden, Minnesota, as the spot for their first annual Dessert Bake-Off, Hannah is thrilled to serve as the head judge. But when a fellow judge, Coach Boyd Watson, is found stone-cold dead, facedown in Hannah’s celebrated strawberry shortcake, Lake Eden’s sweet ride to fame turns very sour indeed. Between perfecting her Cheddar Cheese Apple Pie and Chocolate Crunchies, Hannah’s snooping into the coach’s private life and not coming up short on suspects. And could Watson’s harsh criticism during the judging have given one of the contestants a license to kill? The stakes are rising faster than dough, and Hannah will have to be very careful, because somebody is cooking up a recipe for murder . . . with Hannah landing on the “necessary ingredients” list.

"4⭐️

This book was just as good as the first! I was so happy when I read about who the first victim was, especially after reading the first book. I guessed who did it, again, which is unheard of for me because I never figure it out. I guess I'm getting better at that!

The story itself was great and I love the way Joanne Fluke teased the romance between Hannah and Mike. I also loved seeing Hannah and Andrea continue to build on their sisterly relationship and become closer.

I will definitely be reading the next book soon and highly recommend this book, too, just like the first."

"Pros:

I feel that this book was more realistic for me. Having the police say Hannah should not investigate matters. Having Hannah realize she needs to get some safety training also was a major improvement to me.

I like seeing the sisters bond over helping others and begin to become friends. It’s a slow process with them which makes it realistic and a bit inspiring. Some people would just have backed away but they both keep making small efforts which lead to progress.

Cons:

I do love the recipes being shared and I know the series is older, I wish that they had a QR code so I could save the recipes easily and maybe see pictures. Also, I know Hannah does sweets but I want to have the recipes for these other dishes mentioned like the stuffed mushrooms or stroganoff."
