"This book was not what I was initially expecting. I opened this book expecting it to be a horror-themed book, but it read more like a watered-down version of Riverdale or a similar teen series that you would find on the CW/Netflix. This is a teen mystery novel about cheerleaders that revolves around bullying, revenge, and murder.

2 stars because it was a surprisingly fast read for me, mainly because I was more invested in Hannah's bullying story. However, the ending I found to be super-duper cliche. I skimmed through a good number of pages of the book, mainly because I was so focused on figuring out who killed Ella. I'm not going to spoil the ending in this review, but it is predictable nonetheless.

The representation in this book is very poor and cliche, it felt like the literary version of a copy and paste teen high school horror movie. I don't know why Kayla Cottingham came to mind when I was reading these books, probably because the writing styles are so similar- except Cottingham's books center sapphic romance, while this book is more heterosexual. Everything about this book screamed mediocre, but not in a good, iconic way for me. The world-building was practically non-existent; therefore I automatically assume that the story took place in a standard high school setting-- the pool, the beach, the gym, somebody's house, etc.

The neurodivergent representation is a joke. The character Raquel, who is said to have autism, is reduced to nothing more than a punching bag for the popular girls and a mere side character for the main character, Dawn. Meanwhile, the three cheerleaders are bitchy and mean, as usual- no redemption arc, no depth, no substance. Just run-of-the-mill teen high school tropes. Every single one of these types of books makes me think of Bodies Bodies Bodies or a similar teen horror film.

The people in the comments criticizing modern YA books lacking substance nowadays kind of have a point. This is why I am big on centering POC authors, because I am tired of seeing our women of color in YA books, TV shows and films being reduced to nothing more than flat, one-dimensional side characters."
