"I’ve finally finished this book and though I’ve been thinking about how to write this review for a while, I can’t quite figure it out still. Guess I’ll just try—

I was severely underwhelmed by this book. Going into it I heard great things and had high hopes and then when it came to the stories I had high hopes for..I was let down. But I think a big reason for this that I discovered while reading this, is I am not a short story person. Not this short anyways. I like taking the characters on a much longer journey and delving deeper into the stories. These were quick- sometimes only 2 pages of a story that to me just felt incomplete.

It’s not that the stories themselves were bad or anything, just incomplete.

I also am not particularly good at symbolism and understanding that some things were synonyms for other things. Scratch that, I’m terrible at it. And unfortunately for me, most of these short stories had a lot of symbolism.

This all said, I still think the writing was good, the ideas were good, and obviously the poetry was good. And I was enjoying some of the stories -before they ended - or as I thought, didn’t really end because I wanted so much more. However, for me, I didn’t particularly like it.

If you’re like me but still want to try the book- I’d say Sister Emilies Lightship was the best."
