With the land to hold them together, nothing can tear the Logans apart. Why is the land so important to Cassie's family? It takes the events of one turbulent year -- the year of the night riders and the burnings, the year a white girl humiliates Cassie in public simply because she is black -- to show Cassie that having a place of their own is the Logan family's lifeblood. It is the land that gives the Logans their courage and pride, for no matter how others may degrade them, the Logans possess something no one can take away. - Back cover.

"<strong>Intriguing </strong><br/><br/>This story is a must read historical fiction. I think it brings a huge sense of reality to the people who might not be aware of such occurrences. Though this was hard to read in certain parts, it was something that I didn’t want to put down. I recommend this book to anyone 12+ who is interested in historical fiction. This story follows Cassie Logan and her family in the racist south of the 1950s. Cassie is a strong-willed girl who gives a fantastic perspective of this story. I greatly recommend this book."
"In the entire 272 pages of this book nothing has been resolved. It’s really disappointing."

"A chilling depiction of African American life in the 1930s south, there are not a lot of light moments in this book. A terrific history lesson, but unrelentingly grim. I hesitate to recommend this to black kids; I want them to know their history but to also have some hope, and to feel happy about being African American rather than depressed. Few black kids I know actually enjoy these novels."
"Very Slow and Tedious Plot and not much Action"
