“Redefines ‘unputdownable.’” —Amie Kaufman, New York Times bestselling author of Illuminae “I was thrilled. I was shocked.” —NPR “Stunning twists and turns.” —BCCB (starred review) In this gripping debut novel, seventeen-year-old Cat must use her gene-hacking skills to decode her late father’s message concealing a vaccine to a horrifying plague.Catarina Agatta is a hacker. She can cripple mainframes and crash through firewalls, but that’s not what makes her special. In Cat’s world, people are implanted with technology to recode their DNA, allowing them to change their bodies in any way they want. And Cat happens to be a gene-hacking genius. That’s no surprise, since Cat’s father is Dr. Lachlan Agatta, a legendary geneticist who may be the last hope for defeating a plague that has brought humanity to the brink of extinction. But during the outbreak, Lachlan was kidnapped by a shadowy organization called Cartaxus, leaving Cat to survive the last two years on her own. When a Cartaxus soldier, Cole, arrives with news that her father has been killed, Cat’s instincts tell her it’s just another Cartaxus lie. But Cole also brings a message: before Lachlan died, he managed to create a vaccine, and Cole needs Cat’s help to release it and save the human race. Now Cat must decide who she can trust: The soldier with secrets of his own? The father who made her promise to hide from Cartaxus at all costs? In a world where nature itself can be rewritten, how much can she even trust herself?

"I have always loved Dystopia, but this book takes it to a whole other level because the future in it is one that could honestly be a present in the next couple decades.
As a biology geek, this book combined everything I know about gene therapy and technology along with the theories and experiments that have been thrown around off handedly in class and made them into a reality. The terror of the virus is so relatable with the pandemic we are going through and the plot twists and reveals are so incredibly laid out. I think this is my favorite book I've read this year and I will 100% be reading the next ones.
The authors writing itself was just beautiful, the descriptions making you feel like you're right there with her. A dystopian novel is a make it or break it when it comes to the world creation and the science fiction so closely lingers on fact that it is exciting and eerie at the same time. She is able to switch her tone or syntaxes depending on the stress levels of our main character, Cat, making you feel like you're living it.
Read it in about 2-3 days, not because it was short (it was one of the longer ones) but bc its shorter chapters hooked me in and made me keep reading. "
"A terrificly written book filled with intelligence and beautiful diction. Hands down one of the best books I have ever read, and its two other pairings are likewise fantastic. The plot is rich with twists and turns you’ll never expect. Absolutely worth reading and one of the most intelligent dystopian novels I’ve had the pleasure of reading. "
