From the New York Times bestselling author of the Falling Kingdoms series comes the first book in a brand-new duology about forbidden magic and dangerous secrets, for readers of Victoria Aveyard and Margaret Rogerson.Josslyn Drake knows only three things about magic: it’s rare, illegal, and always deadly. So when she’s caught up in a robbery gone wrong at the Queen’s Gala and infected by a dangerous piece of magic—one that allows her to step into the memories of an infamously evil warlock—she finds herself living her worst nightmare. Joss needs the magic removed before it corrupts her soul and kills her. But in Ironport, the cost of doing magic is death, and seeking help might mean scheduling her own execution. There’s nobody she can trust. Nobody, that is, except wanted criminal Jericho Nox, who offers her a deal: his help extracting the magic in exchange for the magic itself. And though she’s not thrilled to be working with a thief, especially one as infuriating (and infuriatingly handsome) as Jericho, Joss is desperate enough to accept. But Jericho is nothing like Joss expects. The closer she grows to Jericho and the more she sees of the world outside her pampered life in the city, the more Joss begins to question the beliefs she’s always taken for granted—beliefs about right and wrong, about power and magic, and even about herself. In an empire built on lies, the truth may be her greatest weapon.

"I meant to write this review this morning but I was actually productive with back to school prep today which means by now I have even less to say about this book. It was fine, the writing and dialogue were kind of stiff/slightly off in a way that made me notice the mechanics more than I like to and also question myself like what is even a good sentence anyway and why do I think there's something wrong with this one? Am I getting snobby? I don't know. The plot and characters were fine but nothing special, the romance was kinda fast but it went through the motions satisfactorily, and I get to the end and...is this a series? Those are my feelings but also it was a quick read and I liked the tropes it gave me so I don't regret reading it either and I might even continue the series if it is one. I think I liked it more than I'm letting on. Just not mind-blowing. Oh also the mystery was predictable but still produced some good moments imo. Idk maybe 3.5. I don't even know what my ratings mean to me. I don't really give lower stars than 3 so sometimes 3 means this was pretty good but I just don't care very much about it and sometimes 3 means I full on thought it was unreadable. My awful rating system is coming back to bite me."

"First book is okay. This author is not for me due to her writing style but had an In intriguing plot line. Read the second book which I did not enjoy due to writing style and the plot. Did not like the way it ended or how they got to that point. "

"I had high hopes for this book, but it ended up just being okay for me. It started out slow, but it did pick up and got better at the end where there was a reveal.
This book has the trope about magic being forbidden. It's about Jossyln Drake and being the daughter of the former Prime Minister while she's at the Queen's Gala she finds herself in the middle of a robbery gone bad and gets infected with dangerous magic. This magic helps her tap into the memories of a evil and infamous warlock and she needs to get the magic removed but the penalty of doing magic is death and seeking help could get her the death penalty. There's no one she can go to for help except a wanted criminal, Jericho who wants the magic in exchange for helping her. She ends up finding a world outside of the rich world she's known with Jericho and she comes to have feelings for Jericho.
Jossyln ends up on an adventure with Jericho and she finds out there's a lot more to the world than she thought and that magic may not be as bad as she was told. There are some shocking twists and a big reveal at the end, which leaves you hanging on a major cliffhanger.
If you like the magic forbidden trope or this kind of story, then go ahead and check it out.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Penguin Young Readers Group for letting me read and review this interesting read. All opinions are my own."
