Octavia E. Butler
The stunning conclusion to a postapocalyptic trilogy about an alien species merging with humans—from “one of science fiction’s finest writers” (TheNew York Times). Human and Oankali have been mating since the aliens first came to Earth to rescue the few survivors of an annihilating nuclear war. The Oankali began a massive breeding project, guided by the ooloi, a sexless subspecies capable of manipulating DNA, in the hope of eventually creating a perfect starfaring race. Jodahs is supposed to be just another hybrid of human and Oankali, but as he begins his transformation to adulthood he finds himself becoming ooloi—the first ever born to a human mother. As his body changes, Jodahs develops the ability to shapeshift, manipulate matter, and cure or create disease at will. If this frightened young man is able to master his new identity, Jodahs could prove the savior of what’s left of mankind. Or, if he is not careful, he could become a plague that will destroy this new race once and for all. Readers of Ursula K. Le Guin and N. K. Jemisin will be fascinated by bestselling author Octavia Butler’s thought-provoking and compelling vision of humanity. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Octavia E. Butler including rare images from the author’s estate.

"First 2 books were phenomenal but this one was a bit harder to get through. It was a bit weirder than the other. I originally gave it a 3.5 but I rounded it up."

"This is the best book in the series but it is only the best because of everything the reader goes through to get there. At this point in the series we have heard from the human perspective with Lilith, the Construct-Oankali perspective through Akin, and the Construct-Ooloi perspective through Jodhas. It is through these eyes that the reader goes from feelings of fear and hatred to an almost idealized version of how we wish humans would behave. Most people get hung up on the "forced sex" aspect of the alien invasion and forget to see that this series is really about humanity... How we let petty differences like race, sex, sexuality, class and language get in our way. How we can be willing to hurt the most venerable people just to continue on. How we are willing to destroy things and people as long as we survive. Sometimes its just nice to get out of your human skin and see an apocalypse book that is not dark and brooding. Octavia Butlers writing is flawless and while the story is not action packed I still found myself wanting to go on and see what would happen next."
"3.5
I still got sucked into the story, but it didn’t have the same impact on me as the first two books did. This one felt a bit repetitive. I was hoping for an exploration of what was happening on mars like the 2nd book built up to. The pacing felt off to me as well. The ending felt rushed. Also, there were a lot of grammatical and punctuation errors in the book. It was funny at first but it really started to take me out of the story!

I need to take some time to think about why this book used first perspective instead a of third perspective like the other two. It didn’t make me feel anymore connected with Jodahs and I was honestly missing Lilith and Akin while reading this book.

Even though this wasn’t my fav Octavia book, it was still entertaining and I hope to read more of her books soon."
