NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • STONEWALL BOOK AWARD WINNER • ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE’S 100 BEST YA BOOKS OF ALL TIMENAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR by The New York Times • Time • Buzzfeed • NPR • New York Public Library • Publishers Weekly • School Library JournalA genre-defying novel from the award-winning author NPR describes as “like [Madeline] L’Engle…glorious.” A singular book that explores themes of identity and justice. Pet is here to hunt a monster. Are you brave enough to look? There are no monsters anymore, or so the children in the city of Lucille are taught. Jam and her best friend, Redemption, have grown up with this lesson all their life. But when Jam meets Pet, a creature made of horns and colors and claws, who emerges from one of her mother's paintings and a drop of Jam's blood, she must reconsider what she's been told. Pet has come to hunt a monster, and the shadow of something grim lurks in Redemption's house. Jam must fight not only to protect her best friend, but also to uncover the truth, and the answer to the question--How do you save the world from monsters if no one will admit they exist?A riveting and timely young adult debut novel that asks difficult questions about what choices you can make when the society around you is in denial. "[A] beautiful, genre-expanding debut" –The New York Times"The word hype was invented to describe books like this." –Refinery29

"An amazing juvenile/young adult story about the importance of honesty, understanding history, and access to information. When we “don’t talk about that” or whitewash history, we open ourselves up to repeat it. "

""But when realities diverged and you found yourself on a different path from people you used to share a path with...well. Masks were useful then; not quite lies, not quite truths. Just decisions about what to be and what to show. Curation."<br/><br/>Pet is the first book I've read by Akwaeke Emezi, and I LOVED it. I'm not going to write much for this review, but Pet has a lot more to it than just what the synopsis says, and you need to read it. It's one of my favorite books I've read this year so far. This book is unique, and it took me through all the emotions. Pet is a book you definitely shouldn't miss! <br/><br/>CW - abuse (off-page)"
"It’s taken a few weeks to find a new book to finish. It’s like I find a good book and then struggle to find one that will hook me. Anyway. This book is so important to what’s happening now. Pet is a cautionary tale that if you pretend that monsters are gone it will only lead to the infiltration of more monsters. It’s such an incredible book. And the mc is an awesome character bc there’s laws that everyone follows bc there’s “no monsters” but since she’s trans, her parents always worry about her safety due to the way trans girls used to be treated. This is an important queer read if you’re looking for a black trans mc who fights alongside an 8 foot Angel with her best friend it’s so ******* awesome!!"
