"A lighthearted easy read. There are a lot of religious themes mixed with modern ideas all set in the 1920's with a Supernatural vibe. The dialogue was good and the characters OK if you don't think too hard about them. Though I didn't see the point of the story, it ended almost exactly where it had started with a cost that she wouldn't have gotten if she'd not done anything. I also think everyone reconciled a little to easily. It was a nice palette cleanser if you get what I mean. Especially if you're reading heavier books. But otherwise not really my thing."
"This book really throws you right into the action and I loved it! It features period-typical sexism and homophobia which I usually hate reading but this book showed it in a different light. It really allowed the joy that comes from love to shine through despite what society believes and made me love this book even more. I came for the gay love story and stayed for a protagonist with a fascinating backstory and a hugely fun Chicago dialect. Her and her love for her girlfriend and her brother was so touching and made me truly fall in love with this story. Besides the characters, the world building in this book was breathtaking. I loved learning the rules of the magical societies in this universe and it made the mystery that much more compelling as it felt like I was figuring out the world and the murders at the same. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves sapphic love stories and is fascinated with magical worlds. "
"This book was a fun read! Fast paced and lots of action, they took it in a direction I wasn’t expecting but I ended up really enjoying the plot! The end had me in tears. I loved the old fashioned slangs and the outfits and settings! I also loved the strong female leads! this book will hold a special place in my heart ❤️ "
"Most books that I rate 5 stars are ones I knew I would really enjoy. But this book, which I just randomly decided to buy on sale and only read because I needed something short to read before my next more anticipated release came, was the most surprising 5 star read for me in a while. I’m not the biggest Historical Fiction fan, and for some reason I don’t really click with narratives that take place in the 1940s like in this book, but the setting here was beautifully created and established, with detailed fantasy world building and plenty of demons and angels spread throughout the story. Also, so many surprising twists with the thriller narrative, even in just 133 pages. And Helen and Elena… such a beautiful couple. Even with the homophobia of the time period, we still got an amazing historical sapphic romance, and Helen and Elena clearly really loved each other. I think I was expecting a bit more of a tearjerker with the whole plot of heartbreak coming if Helen didn’t act soon enough, but even though there were emotional messages, this was more thrilling and romantic than sad in my opinion. And the ending was perfect. Plus, this is short enough to read in 2-3 days, but not a single moment is wasted. Even if I don’t do novellas or stories like this often, this is one of the most beautiful books I’ve read this year. This book really surprised me, and it’s a must read for anyone who likes Sapphic historical stories or historical fantasy thrillers. "
