From the New York Times bestselling author of Something in the Water comes “an utter white-knuckle ride that took me into a heart of darkness” (Lucy Foley, author of The Paris Apartment). “Addictive, thrilling, intoxicating.”—Lisa Jewell, author of None of This Is True “The vacation home of dreams . . . or nightmares? What a ride—I tore through this nail-biting, pacey read.”—Sarah Pearse, author of The RetreatNina, still grieving from the loss of her father, discovers that she has inherited property in the British Virgin Islands—a vacation home she had no idea existed, until now. The house is extraordinary: state-of-the-art, all glass and marble. How did her sensible father come into enough money for this? Why did he keep it from her? And what else was he hiding?Maria, once an ambitious medical student, is a nanny for the super-rich. The money’s better, and so are the destinations where her work takes her. Just one more gig, and she’ll be set. Finally, she’ll be secure. But when her wards never show, Maria begins to make herself at home, spending her days luxuriating by the pool and in the sauna. There’s just one rule: Don’t go in the basement. That room is off-limits. But her curiosity might just get the better of her. And soon, she’ll wish her only worry was not getting paid.

And that’s all I’m going to say because this is one of those stories best to go in fairly blind. Most of the fun was in the confusion of “just what in the f*ck is the deal with this crazy (but cool!?) house?!” Yes sounds gothic but really not, with a brighter more modern, summery feel but still that underlying sinister vibe.
I’ve generally enjoyed Catherine Steadman’s books and always appreciate her writing. If you liked The Family Game and Something in Water you will like this one. 4.25⭐️"
"This is one of those perfect summer thrillers. You have a tropical paradise, two curious women, secrets galore, twists all over and of course, dead bodies. This story is told from multiple points of view and the overall story slowly unrolls itself. After Nina’s father has passed, she finds out that she has inherited a tropical mansion in the British Virgin Islands that she never knew existed. She decides to visit the house before selling hoping to get to know her father better and to find out what other kinds of secrets he was keeping from her. Maria is a former medical student who works as an au pair to make money to be able to afford a return to her studies. Her new gig has her staying in a state-of-the-art island house with only one rule, don’t go in the basement. Will curiosity be the downfall of them both? The tension is high, so you want to keep turning the pages, but I was still able to set the book down to get a decent night’s rest (well, for the most part). The characters are amazing, smart and both are reliable narrators worth rooting for. The setting is what sells this book. The tropical island’s isolation and amazing views hide the darkness that drives the overall story perfectly. Thriller fans should definitely pick up a copy of this book, but I also think this will be a hit with horror fans."
