This "gripping and moving" story of two foster brothers sharply examines the impact of loss, grief, and abuse (Emma Donohgue, bestselling author of Room) -- and celebrates the power of friendship. When Adam Blake lands the best elective ever in his senior year, serving as an aide to the school psychologist, he thinks he's got it made. Sure, it means a lot of sitting around, which isn't easy for a guy with ADHD, but he can't complain, since he gets to spend the period texting all his friends. Then the doctor asks him to track down the troubled freshman who keeps dodging her, and Adam discovers that the boy is Julian -- the foster brother he hasn't seen in five years. Adam is ecstatic to be reunited. At first, Julian seems like the boy he once knew. He's still kind hearted. He still writes stories and loves picture books meant for little kids. But as they spend more time together, Adam realizes that Julian is keeping secrets, like where he hides during the middle of the day, and what's really going on inside his house. Adam is determined to help him, but his involvement could cost both boys their lives. First-time novelist Robin Roe relied on life experience when writing this exquisite, gripping story featuring two lionhearted characters.

"I expected A List of Cages to be a typical young adult drama where everything is toned down and the subject matter never gets too dark. I was so very, very wrong. Without giving any spoilers, in this book you will find scenarios that are very hard to digest. Julian's situation is one that no one should ever find themselves in, though it unfortunately happens all too often. I think that is part of what makes this book so difficult to read at times; because you know there are children who go through these kinds of things every day and it is completely heartbreaking. However, even though the subject matter is rather tough, this book is definitely worth reading.

I went through every emotion possible while reading this book. I laughed. I felt fear. I yelled out in anger. I cried and then cried some more. I jumped up and down with joy. I've read books that have made me feel emotional before, but never quite like this.

This book is extremely well written. The perspective bounces back and forth between that of Adam and of Julian. I have read books in the past that the author has tried to use first person narrative for more than one character. These typically turn out okay, but just okay. The characters usually end up having the same narrative voice so even though they're saying different things, they still sound the same. However, Roe has captured both of these amazing characters in such a way that they actually feel like different people. The writing style, mood, tone and narrative all change drastically to fit each character perfectly. You almost don't need the headings that alert you to whose perspective you're about to read. If I didn't know better, I would think this book was written by two people - in a good way.

Julian's story is heartbreaking and yet somehow uplifting at the same time. I have never read an ending so satisfying. Read this book. You will not regret it."

"Do yourself a favor and read this book.

Wow.
I could not put this book down. You read through the perspectives of two amazing characters- Julian and Adam.
Julian sections are truly heartbreaking. He’s had a very unfortunate life and he continually takes abuse of all sorts that tears him down and diminishes him as a person. Then Adam comes along and takes him under his wing. Adam is the perfect example a kind and caring person. I adore this character. I adore both of them.
There are some gripping moments. A few completely took my breath away. And there are some very touching moments. This has easily landed in my favorites and it’s a debut novel. What?! Congrats Robin Roe, you created a masterpiece that I think everyone should read."
