"I simply adore this book. Can you say you adore in reference to folkloric horror in which ancient deities want to rain death and destruction on the world? It's creepy. It's visceral. It's atmospheric. It's dark. It's great. This book starts with a basic horror start, everyone is innocent and doing something that should be a fun time for the family. In this case an American architect, Carmen, is in Mexico converting an ancient abbey into a new hotel. She has brought her daughters, Izel and Luna, along for family bonding, fun and obviously financial reasons. Izel is a sullen and guarded teenager who wishes she was spending her summers with her friends, while Luna is an open book determined to explore and learn everything she can about the country her family comes from. Slowly, dark and unexplainable things begin to happen around the three of them, as well as a warning message from a Nahua woman who has an ability to see things others cannot see. When an accident on the job site sends them home early, Carmen and the girls return to America with something dark, sinister and dead set on vengeance in tow... Gout manages to weave in Mesoamerican history, with all of the colonialism and violence, to create a classic possession horror novel from a new and fresh angle. Do I think this book could be better? absolutely, but I think that of most horror books once I finish them. Did it get the heart racing and the imagination dark? 100%. would I recommend this book? Yes, but with the disclaimer that you don't mind graphic horror."
