The stunning sequel to Daughter of the Moon Goddess delves deeper into beloved Chinese mythology, concluding the epic story of Xingyin--the daughter of Chang'e and the mortal archer, Houyi--as she battles a grave new threat to the realm, in this powerful tale of love, sacrifice, and hope. After winning her mother's freedom from the Celestial Emperor, Xingyin thrives in the enchanting tranquility of her home. But her fragile peace is threatened by the discovery of a strange magic on the moon and the unsettling changes in the Celestial Kingdom as the emperor tightens his grip on power. While Xingyin is determined to keep clear of the rising danger, the discovery of a shocking truth spurs her into a perilous confrontation. Forced to flee her home once more, Xingyin and her companions venture to unexplored lands of the Immortal Realm, encountering legendary creatures and shrewd monarchs, beloved friends and bitter adversaries. With alliances shifting quicker than the tides, Xingyin has to overcome past grudges and enmities to forge a new path forward, seeking aid where she never imagined she would. As an unspeakable terror sweeps across the realm, Xingyin must uncover the truth of her heart and claw her way through devastation--to rise against this evil before it destroys everything she holds dear, and the worlds she has grown to love . . . even if doing so demands the greatest price of all.

"Aaaahhh. My heart was shattered and taped back together by the end of this book. I haven't read something this throughly captivating in a while. I was in love with the characters and the story and the world that Sue Lynn Tan built. It's gonna take me a while to get over the heartbreak of finishing this duology. It takes a lot for me to shed tears over a book, and this ending accomplished that. There could not have been another way to end Xingying's story. It was masterfully written, even if it tore my soul apart."
"Another wonderful fantasy book with a interesting world building and a gripping plot. However, I feel like the second book fell short on the characters. I felt like some of the romance was not believable and confusing. Also, there were some solutions I believed did not fit with the characters, as the main protagonist doesn’t have a good handle on her emotions and lashes out, how did she imitate her mother who is the opposite? It doesn’t fit really. Still, I enjoyed the cast of characters and was glad we were shown a lot more sides to characters who didn’t get much last book."

"The lore is great. The story is intense. But the beach scene broke my suspension of disbelief. I am not a big fan of love triangles, especially when they are drawn out through the whole book. I am not bothered with how it was finally resolved, but it was more than a little unfair to the character who got strung along the whole story. "

"The Story brings more to the tale of Xingyin from Daughter of the Moon Goddess, and the antagonist of this story although shown to be cowardly...was very manipulative and heart wrenching!, Definitely liked when they were finally defeated although I would have enjoyed them having more dialogue in the climax where Xingyin foils their plans.... definitely on board with her from the start when she wanted to kill him so bad.....Also Ancient Zombie Plot twist was a little bit interesting...and of course the love triangle, who doesn't like the love triangle... I'm happy Xingyin was able to find her happiness in the end. "
"when i tell you i would sell my soul to read this for the first time again, i mean it. slt is such a beautiful writer, and im honestly so excited for the next book in the celestial kingdom series. i finished this in basically 3 days and couldn’t put it down for hours. some parts literally had me gasping out loud and slamming the book shut so i could recollect myself lmao.
this book, as well as dotmg, had me wanting xingyin to be with wenzhi and then lewei and then ultimately back to wenzhi.
it was such a beautiful story, beautifully written, beautiful lines and quotes. ugh. i love this series from the bottom of my heart. read it. "
