R. F. Kuang
The exciting end to The Poppy War trilogy, R. F. Kuang’s acclaimed, award-winning epic fantasy that combines the history of twentieth-century China with a gripping world of gods and monsters, to devastating, enthralling effect. After saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead. Despite her losses, Rin hasn’t given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so much—the people of the southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home. Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challenges—and unexpected opportunities. While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realizes that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation. Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonizing Hesperians, and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners. As her power and influence grows, though, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenix’s intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it?

"I’m crying; full on gut wrenching sobs. Though this books is again rated 4 stars I think the series as a whole is 5. •SPOILER WARNING• I actually can’t believe that Rin died. I knew that there was no way for her to get a happy ending, but it still shattered my heart. She certainly was unstable, unredeemable, and one of my favorite MCs I have ever read about. It broke me on how she was towards the end. With her being paranoid with Venka and her distrusting Kitay. I really didn’t think it would end that way. Reading the epilogue from Nezha really twisted the knife in my chest. It’s crazy to look back on the first book and know how it all ends. There is a void in my heart that this series left, I think I knew what finishing this series would feel like and that’s why I put it off. The reason that the rating is lower than 5 stars is because some parts seemed to drag, and there was some regression. Please don’t let that stop you however! This book was amazing, the writing was real and touching. I would give anything to read it for the first time again. "
"Finally finished this series! So very good! And the ending was so satisfying. It seemed like the only outcome. Great writing that has me wanting to dive into the historical events that inspired this series. Immersive, with complex characters that get you thinking about all that humans can be."
"Oh how far we have come. I have read through what seemed like 20 years of Rin's life and to go back to memories of where it first started was surreal. Rapidly watching Rin become cold-blooded was almost unbearable. Again she is the main character and is supposed to be loved. But I'm not complaining, this is just new territory for me. To be caught off guard is a rare thing at my level of reading.
Rin and Nazha gave me Kylo and Rey vibes and I could not nor did I get enough of it. There was so much nostalgia here that it really made me ache for the days when everything was easier and the path more clear. There seemed to be no real plan. Rin just burned and burned because that was all she knew how to do. The choices of loyalty made my brain seesaw.
Honestly, I would like to give this book one less star for just the sheer audacity of what it has put me through but the author deserves better than that. Never in my days have I held so much ire for a book I cared about. I love and appreciate this story but it can go to hell.
This fictional world hit too close to home in a very haunting way. Like how the Western world discounted everyone who doesn't look, act, or worship like them. One of the most shameful things in our history to be honest. Burning God is a harsh, magical recreation of a bygone era. But it is also beautiful, rich with character growth and unfathomable choices. I hate and love it and will always appreciate the journey.

"We are inferior, until we speak, dress, act, and worship just like them.""
"WWWHHHHYYYYYYYYYY

Could this series have ended any other way? Probably not. Does that ease the pain? Not at all.

This was the best book in the series so far. It was long and painful and gruesome. I’ve asked so many times for an MC who is just utterly flawed, cruel, vindictive, spiteful, vengeful and this is the first time I’ve ever actually gotten it. Rin is one of the greatest characters of all time because she is so human. I love her and hate her so much."
"Im gonna sob i loved this series so much…MAJOR SPOILERS DONT READ THIS!!! ⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ Rin dying at the end is so bittersweet, because I absolutely love her and kitay, but now nikara has a chance of living…and i still love nezha idc that poor kid…kitay is literally my favorite character of any book, tv show, movie, everything. I’m sad we will never know if he was a traitor or not (or i just didnt read hard enough and didn’t see if they said anything or not). I would KILL for a novella of what happened after rin’s death in nezha’s pov but i know that will never happen lmao"
"The character development in this series is phenomenal "
