Cal Newport
In this book with unique perspective, professor Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice, and sets out to discover the reality of how people end up loving their careers. A focus on passion over skill can be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. Spending time with professionals who admit to deriving great satisfaction from their work, Newport uncovers the strategies they use and the pitfalls they avoid in developing their compelling careers. Cal reveals 4 Rules for falling in love with your job: #1: Don't follow your passion #2: Be so good they can't ignore you #3: Turn down a promotion #4: Think small, act big Cal Newport's manifesto is mandatory reading for anyone fretting about what to do with their life, or frustrated by their current job situation. So Good They Can't Ignore You provides an evidence-based blueprint for creating work you love, and will change the way you think about careers, happiness, and the crafting of a remarkable life.

"I've sort of become numb to the usual career advice/self help these past few years, mostly because I've felt disillusioned with the whole productivity mindset, but this book genuinely has a lot of good points.

What I got out of it was very much an affirmation of what I've experienced myself. Here's some of my thoughts on Newport's points:

It's hard for me to say I'm passionate about computer science, I just do whatever sounds interesting and fulfilling. But by exploring and gaining "career capital", I not only have a better sense of what I find fulfilling and enjoyable, I have opened up so many avenues for future careers.

I think the main difference with a passion vs craft mindset is that passion is trying to find fulfillment by working backward from what you *think* brings you happiness. While the opposite, honing a craft, is taking baby steps until you feel comfortable enough making a decision to commit to what actually brings you happiness. Passion is setting the course of your life from day 1, meanwhile craft is searching for meaning which is this ever evolving thing."
