A modern-day Alice in Wonderland meets the undead... Alice in Zombieland, the first book in The White Rabbit Chronicles, introduces readers to a world newly overrun by zombies...and the one girl who may be able to save mankind. She won't rest until she's sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. But that's all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone. Her father was right. The monsters are real. To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn't careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies. "I read this series before I knew was condoms were used for and became obsessed-enough that my mom took the books away until about five years later I bought them all at the store again, wanting to reread the first book series that made me fall in love with its characters. Holds a unique spooky-sexy nostalgia that I think I’ll always love."
"What I liked: Alice in Zombieland is about a girl that finds out that her father wasn’t really simply a mental case when he locked the family in at night to protect them from terrible creatures. The monsters are real, and they’re coming, and they will eat you. Ali is reeling from the tragedy of losing her entire family while adjusting to her new reality where zombies exist and she can now see them. Teaming up with others at her school, she must fight to prove that she’s worthy of sharing their secrets and fighting the good fight.

What I didn’t like: The zombies in Alice in Zombieland are not zombies, but rather some type of soul-eating spirit monsters. There is little of Alice in Wonderland to be found in this book. At the beginning, I was under the impression that there would be more, but it quickly devolves to only tangentially related chapter titles and a main character with the same name. Given that zombies and Alice in Wonderland are the two main reasons I picked the title up, it was a bit of a recipe for disappointment for me. Also, the insta-love with Cole Holland was ridiculous. Even though Showalter tried to explain it away with some sort of magical something or another, it turned me off their relationship for a big chunk of the novel.

Final thoughts: Alice in Zombieland can be enjoyable, if you know what to expect. Don’t come in expecting a retelling of Alice in Wonderland in any form, nor true zombies. Be prepared for the ridiculously executed insta-love and some heavy melodrama. If you can handle these things and enjoy the characters, you can find in this novel a quite different take on the teens fighting evil theme. I’ll likely continue the series."

"I am now a firm believer that there is nothing that Gena Showalter can't do. I have loved each novel of hers I have picked up. She's an amazingly talented author who wields words with the best of them. My dear friends, Alice in Zombieland is another fantastic novel that must be read. I loved all the references to the classic Alice in Wonderland. The chapter titles had me giggling. The references in the novel itself were entertaining. Alice in Zombieland was an amazing adventure from start to finish. It was everything I had hoped for and more.

So many emotions played out in this book. Quite literally, I laughed and I cried. Rinse, repeat. But I was happy that Alice was a strong character. She was put through the ringer in this book. She didn't have this perfect life that was upturned. She had a very difficult and cut off life and then things got worse. Despite Alice living in a world were zombies exist, she felt very real.

I haven't read a lot of zombie books. To be honest, zombies aren't really my monster of choice. The zombies in this book aren't your normal run of the mill zombies. I really appreciate the different spin on the monster. And it's a nice change of pace in a genre full of wereanimals and vampires where the monsters blend together so easily. Gena Showalter's zombies do not blend. I can't fully tell you why I loved her version of zombies without spoiling it (and I'm not adding it here with a spoiler tag, because the book isn't out yet and I seriously refuse to give it away). But let me tell you, I will most definitely be reading the next one.

And what is a Showalter novel without a romance? I loved the teen angst with heartthrob Cole Holland. Cole is a yummy addition to the book and you have your normal teenage high school drama of "stay away from my man" going on. I loved the tension. I'm a sucker for it.

Really, this is just a book you need to preorder. Pronto. It's just an amazing adventure you wouldn't want to miss out on. I'm already excited for book two (I know, I know, I will have to try and be patient) and this is definitely a book that will be read more than once.

And I would just like to point out that I'm quoted for the Intertwined series in the book!! *squeeeeeeeeee!!!* My first, that I know of, in print!

*ARC was provided by the publisher in exchange for honest review. No compensation, other than the book, was provided*"
"Teen romance/ adventure. Alice wakes up to finding her family dead and then seeing zombies and to top it off a hot romance with cole and realizing she’s a zombie slayer like him and his friends. It’s like a woah but maybe cringe type of romance but hey it’s all fantasy anyways! "
