A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?Gamache and Beauvoir’s memories of that tragic case, the one that first brought them together, come rushing back. Did their mother’s murder hurt them beyond repair? "I loved this series up until The Madness of Crowds, which I finished but did not enjoy. I couldn't even finish this one. I made it to the halfway point and gave up. Between the horrific crimes committed against children and the presence of multiple psychopaths, it was a depressing slog. On top of that it was missing the beautiful writing of her earlier books. Huge disappointment.

"As a diehard Penny fan I eagerly await her books. This one started out a bit differently from the others. The timeline switches were a little hard to keep track of and I wasn’t sure where they were going. However the pace picked up and I found it very hard to put the book down. I read it in a day and a half during a snowstorm!"
