In this YA pop punk debut about queer romance and destroying labels, a teen risks everything to write his own story. Perfect for fans of Sonora Reyes and Adib Khorram. Stonebridge High’s resident bad boy, Wesley “Big Mac” Mackenzie, is failing senior year—thanks to his unchecked anger, rowdy friends, and a tendency to ditch his homework for skateboarding and a secret photography obsession. So when his mom drags him to a production of The Nutcracker, Wes isn’t interested at all . . . until he sees Tristan Monroe. Mr. Nutcracker himself. Wes knows he shouldn’t like Tristan; after all, he’s a ballet dancer, and Wes is as closeted as they come. But when they start spending time together, Wes can’t seem to get Tristan out of his head. Driven by a new sense of purpose, Wes begins to think that maybe he can change for the better and graduate on time. As a falling-out with his friends becomes inevitable, Wes realizes that being himself means taking a stand—and blowing up the bad-boy reputation he never wanted in the first place. From a debut author to watch, Skater Boy delivers a heart-wrenching, validating, and honest story about what it means to be gay in a world where you don’t fit in.

"4.5 stars

I loved almost everything about this! There was 1 thing that bothered me and that was never addressed but it wasn’t something that ruined the whole story. Getting to see Wes slowly become a better person and accept the things about himself that he was hiding was beautiful in the most messy way. I loved getting to see his passion for photography and the people he loved and it was super easy to root for him! There’s a lot that I could say about this book but I don’t want to give any spoilers so I’ll just say that I definitely recommend it, if you like coming of age stories! ☺️ also the audiobook is narrated by Michael Crouch and I will always recommend anything and everything he narrates! Thanks to NetGalley and the RB Media for the arc!"
"March was a reading slump for me. I tried reading several books and nothing held my interest. I finally picked up some graphic novels that got me going again, and after really enjoying [b:Out of Left Field|58064783|Out of Left Field|Jonah Newman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1706612814l/58064783._SY75_.jpg|76202561], Skater Boy popped up as read-alike and I'm so glad I read it. I wouldn't have thought I would've related to a "punk" skater teen, but I guess some things are universal--the feeling of being lost, the fear of being left behind, the struggle to make sense of your emotions and then the joy when things finally start to click.

Nerada does an amazing job of making every character well-rounded and have the issues feel realistic and the outcomes organic. Wes made me frustrated, but I really liked him, and enjoyed getting to see him figure himself out."
